RULES:

1.  Beach debris and beach plastic are not mutually exclusive, and they count hand in hand. As long as it’s salty, it is fair game. If it looks like it doesn’t belong on the beach, then pick it up! WE DON’T WANT DRIFTWOOD. If it poses a threat to the environment or possible harm to others, just be a good person. Pick it up; we’ll throw it out. But the point is to eliminate plastic out of the environment. If there is any confusion, plead your case at the weigh in.

Collections are half the task. Teams are also responsible for tallying and sorting for the Long Island Chapter of Surfrider and Upsculpt.

2.  This goes without saying, but if you are a business, don’t include your plastic and debris. If you are a civilian, don’t include your personal recycling or debris. Layman’s terms: don’t include your garbage. We don’t want your garbage.

3.  Official teams can consist of 3-6 people. However, we totally encourage you to use your networks. If you wanna bribe your friends, go for it.  However, only official members of participating teams will take part in grand prizes. Teamwork makes the dream work.

4. Winners will be determined by the total weight of debris and plastic in burlap bags from a hanging scale using the imperial method. Items must fit in the burlap bag in order to be weighed. However you can manage it. You got tools? Use them.

5.  Participants will have from Tuesday August 29th until Tuesday September 26th to collect the most beach debris. Each team will receive burlap bags to use for their collections. The Weigh Ins will be held every THURSDAY in September at the Lin Beach House at 455 NY-25 in Greenport. Each team will have their beach collection of the week weighed & counted. Each team is expected to sort out beach plastic that will be given to UpSculpt, a non profit founded by Cindy Pease Roe that aims to empower action against the crisis of plastic pollution by engaging the public through art, science, and educational workshops.

Not all team members have to be present, but there HAS TO BE AT LEAST one team member in order for collections to be weighed. If you don’t come, you can bring your collections the following week.

Remember, Thursdays at the Lin Beach House from
3 PM until Sundown -ish.

• August 31st - Thursday:
Official Teams will be announced online.
- Scoop your burlap bags, swag, info packets,
size up your competitors.
• September 7th - Thursday:
FIRST weigh in & count + tallying session
• September 14th - Thursday:
SECOND weigh in & count + tallying session
• September 21th - Thursday:
THIRD weigh in & count + tallying session
• September 28th - Thursday:
LAST weigh in & count + tallying session [2PM - 4PM]

the unceremoniously trash party
[5PM-8PM] at the Lin Beach House

We will be announcing each teams’ weight counts and leads every week via Instagram.

6.  You can keep your burlap bags. Use them for your home and garden. You can have your very OWN potato sack race! DOPE!

7.  Non competing individuals may collect and deposit beach garbage and debris, following the same rules. If you collect at least 5 lbs of debris, we’ll toss you a beer from Kidd Squidd Brewing Co!

8. Varying degrees of social distancing may apply. We don’t know what’s going on anymore. Just be cool; be hygienic! Wash yo’ hands.

9. Collection is limited to the North Fork AND SHELTER ISLAND. If you live on Shelter Island, you should totally participate. If you don’t, you can still collect on The Rock! Riverhead still counts. Riverhead to Orient Point. Not Port Jefferson. Not Montauk (yet). Not Oyster Bay. Not Coney Island. Not the Rockaways. NOT BLOCK ISLAND (that’s a whole other super faraway island!). Or Brooklyn, or Queens, or Westerchester, or the Hudson Valley, or Connecticut. There is no way for us to monitor this. So we’re counting on your word. Scout’s Honor guys! You are collecting within the North Fork region (and Shelter Island). It’s especially important since we’re gathering specific data for BOTH the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society and Surfrider Long Island. Keep it local guys. We’re creeps; we’ll find out. You will be disqualified.

10. Use caution when collecting. Wear gloves if possible. Aside from the “normal” debris, oftentimes there can be needles, hooks, and other sharp objects lying around unsuspecting places. Take care of the environment, and take care of yourself, too.
