Critical Distance is a photographic series captured during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The project emerged alongside an unexpected shift in mobility—from years of avid cycling to driving—after the sudden arrival of a car just before global lockdowns began. This change transformed isolation into exploration, offering both physical safety and creative freedom at a moment when the world slowed to a halt.

Photographed on medium format film using a Mamiya 645-E, the images document the quiet, desolate landscapes of the North Fork during lockdown. Revisiting familiar places through the distance of a car and the lens of impending adulthood, the series reflects on nostalgia, solitude, and movement—capturing a liminal moment between youth and thirty, freedom and confinement, closeness and distance.
